The Kpop girl group, STAYC, is the first Kpop artist to garner the cover of Spotify EQUAL Global playlist. Spotify launched EQUAL Global Music Program to foster gender equity in the global audio industry. As the Spotify EQUAL artist of the month, STAYC spoke with Spotify’s newsroom ‘For the Record’ to reveal some facts about their creative process and the women creators they admire.
As stated by Spotify, “EQUAL is Spotify’s global initiative designed to improve the significantly lower proportion and activities of female artists and creators compared to those of men and to amplify the voices of female artists across the globe.”

1. STAYC chose their name carefully
The six-piece girl group chose their name very thoroughly. The name ‘STAYC’ is actually an acronym for ‘Star To A Young Culture.’ It reflects their goal of dominating pop culture, and they’re now on their way!
2. STAYC gains lots of attention on Spotify
With their catchy fan-favorite songs like ‘STEREOTYPE’ and ‘ASAP,’ STAYC is quickly gaining global fans’ attention. Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J have almost 2.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Not only that, but the girls’ work has also earned the group accolades, including the nomination of a Rookie of the Year at Korea’s 2021 Seoul Music Awards.
STAYC is also a nominee in the 2021 MAMA as Best New Female Artist, Best Dance Performance Female Group, and Worldwide Fans Choice Top 10.
3. STAYC music genre
Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J called STAYC’s upbeat sound ‘teenfresh.’ It represents their unique blend of youthful, fresh tunes.

Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J shared that Girls’ Generation artistic talent, skill, and teamwork inspired them greatly. Furthermore, STAYC found their style by practicing songs by Doja Cat, Little Mix, and Bebe Rexha. They seem to admire the artists’ energy and confidence.

STAYC is the advocate of women artists and first Kpop Spotify EQUAL artist of the month, calling for continued diversity and opportunity within the industry. So naturally, it’d be great to get advice from STAYC.

6. A good start as a rookie
At The Fact Music Awards (TMA), STAYC won the Next Leader Award, which became one notable moment in the STAYC music career. The Next Leader Awards is an award that is only given to a rookie artist. Thus, STAYC feels that receiving such an award is an excellent start to their future as artists.
7. Consistency is the key
STAYC creative process consists of consistent practice, because as people say, “practice makes perfect.” Besides, it is also essential to have a clear understanding of each member’s strengths and weaknesses.
“Before we release a new album or go on stage, we go through a period of constant hard work. And throughout the process, we try to figure out our own strengths and weaknesses so that we can sound and look more professional and attractive.”STAYC
8. STAYC believe there should not be any discrimination
STAYC would like to see more significant gender equity in the music industry. They think that there shouldn’t be any discrimination. The girls hope that everyone and anyone can freely express themselves and spread their music and art. Only then can a music culture based on diversity exists, STAYC also believe.
9. STAYC wants to see Olivia Rodrigo
One up-and-coming woman artist STAYC excited to watch is Olivia Rodrigo. She is an artist that STAC personally like and are interested in.
