The rising popularity of Netflix, “The Sound of Magic,” starring Ji Chang Wook, Hwang in Yeop, and Choi Seung Eun is not only thanks to the outstanding transformations of its cast, but also heartwarming music as its soundtrack.
One particular moment that stole the fans’ attention was when an original song by IU, “Knees,” suddenly appeared approaching the end of one of the series’ episodes.
Then, later in an interview on May 9, Netflix “The Sound of Magic” director Kim Sung Yoon revealed that IU actually permitted them to feature her “Knees” song for FREE.
The Reason Why IU Let The Director Used Her Song for Free
According to the director, he initially contacted IU about featuring her song, “Knees”, for Netflix “The Sound of Magic” Kdrama.
Director Kim Sung Yoon called IU directly to discuss the copyright purchase of her song, “Knees” to feature in Netflix “The Sound of Magic” Kdrama. During the call, IU simply replied that he could just use the song.
The reason why IU allowed the director to use her “Knees” song for free was because she wrote and composed the song herself. So, that is why it was her right to give permission to the director to feature “Knees” and release it worldwide via Netflix “The Sound of Magic” Kdrama. Besides, IU and the director apparently went way back. They have known each other since IU first acting debut in “Dream High”.
“We used IU’s song ‘Knees’ at the ending scene and put ‘Lee Ji Eun’, IU’s real name, in the ending credits. However, in order to do it, we have to purchase the copyright. Only then can we release ‘Knees’ in the drama worldwide.
So, I contacted IU to discuss it, but she said, ‘I wrote and composed the song myself, so you can just use it.’. I was so thankful!
