South Korean Films at Berlinale 2024

Korean Film “A Traveler’s Needs”

Director Hong Sang-soo’s latest film, “A Traveler’s Needs,” will have its world premiere at the Berlinale. It also competes against other films in the Competition section for winning the Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards. The film marks Hong’s sixth invitation to the Berlinale since 2020.

Korean movie “A Traveler’s Needs” stars Isabelle Huppert, Lee Hyeyoung, Kwon Haehyo, Cho Yunhee, and Ha Seongguk. This film marks the third collaboration between Isabelle Huppert and the esteemed Korean director. Their previous works include “Claire’s Camera” and “In Another Country.”

In the movie “A Traveler’s Needs,” Isabelle Huppert plays the role of a French woman. When she loses her job and faces financial difficulties, she seeks comfort in Korea. While there, she comes across makgeolli, a traditional Korean drink.

Inspired by her love for makgeolli, she decides to teach French to two Korean women. She shares her knowledge and passion to bridge cultural gaps. This heartwarming story highlights the importance of communication in connecting people from different cultures.

Korean Action Film “The Roundup: Punishment”

“The Roundup: Punishment” is another Korean film to be screened at the Berlinale this year. It is the fourth film in the “The Outlaws” (2017) series. The prestigious Berlinale’s Special Gala section will showcase the movie.

Talented director Heo Myeong Haeng directed the movie. Previously, he served as the martial arts director of the film “The Outlaws.” Moreover, he recently teamed up with actor Ma Dong Seok on the Netflix film “Badland Hunters.”

“The Roundup: Punishment” stars Ma Dong Seok, Kim Moo Yul, Park Ji Hwan, and Lee Dong Hwi. It revolves around “Monster Cop” Ma Seok Do, who uncovers a link between a murdered app developer and an illegal online gambling organization while investigating a drug-trafficking app.

Korean Thriller Supernatural Movie “Exhuma”

The upcoming Korean film “Exhuma” is set to have its world premiere soon at the Berlinale. This forthcoming movie has an impressive cast, including Choi Min Shik, Kim Go Eun, Yoo Hae Jin, Lee Do Hyun, Jeon Jin Ki, and Jeon Jin Gi.

“Exhuma” tells about a wealthy Korean-American family who has fallen under a curse after opening their ancestral vault. This has released an evil spirit. In an attempt to control the spirit, a team of shamans, a geomancer, and an undertaker perform rituals. This horror mystery thriller unravels the consequences of their actions.

Korean Short Films “It’s Okay!” and “Circle”

The Generation Kplus section will showcase director Kim Hye Young’s short film “It’s Okay!” which celebrates coming-of-age stories. In addition, director Joung Yumi’s short film “Circle” will be screened as part of the Berlinale Shorts section.

The 74th Berlin International Film Festival will run until February 24, while the concurrent European Film Market will occur from February 15 to 21. Lupita Nyong’o, the talented actor, will lead the international jury at this year’s festival. Secure the Berlinale tickets for Korean movies here.
