The popular Korean webtoon “Itaewon Class” will have a musical adaptation following its Japanese drama remake. Read on to learn more about the musical version of “Itaewon Class” in Japan.
Korean Webtoon “Itaewon Class” Set for Japanese Musical Adaptation
Author Gwang Jin created the webtoon series “Itaewon Class” and published it on Daum Webtoon in 2016. The series ran until 2020 and became one of the most popular series on the platform.
In 2020, South Korean film distribution and production company ShowBox and Zium Content (acquired by JTBC Studios in 2020) produced the Korean drama adaptation of the same name, “Itaewon Class.” This production also marked ShowBox’s first series and its success in series production.
Starring Park Seo Joon, Kim Da Mi, Kwon Na Ra, Yoo Jae Myung, and other talented actors, the K-drama became a hit and achieved over 16 percent viewership ratings. In addition, the series won the Best Drama Series at the 2020 Asian Television Awards.
With its popularity in Korea and abroad, the hit series received a Japanese adaptation. The Japanese remake of “Itaewon Class” was released with the title “Roppongi Class” and aired on Netflix in 2022. The Japanese remake was led by actor Ryoma Takeuchi, who portrayed the character Park Sae Ro Yi, initially played by Park Seo Joon in the Korean drama “Itaewon Class.”
“Itaewon Class” Musical Adaptation
On January 22, Kakao Entertainment announced that the “Itaewon Class” musical will perform at Brillia Hall in Tokyo this June. Creators from South Korea, Japan, and America collaborate on the stage performance.
One of the creators is Helen Park, who is known as the co-writer of the “KPOP” musical. The Korean American composer wrote the music for the upcoming adaptation.
In addition, Japanese actor and singer Kotaki Nozomu will take on the role of Park Sae Ro Yi. He is one of the members of the Japanese boy group Johnny’s WEST.
“Itaewon Class” Korean Drama
“Itaewon Class” is an inspiring story that follows the hardships faced by a young man named Park Sae Ro Yi. He is expelled from school after punching a bully, and at the same time, his father is mysteriously killed in a tragic accident. Following his father’s footsteps, he opens a pub in Itaewon named “DamBam” and recruits a manager and staff. With him in the lead, they strive to build the pub’s reputation and succeed.
