SM Entertainment is bolstering its music publishing dominance by recruiting global producers and songwriters. Through Kreation Music Rights, it aims to transform into Asia’s top music publisher.
SM Entertainment Aims for Global Talent Acquisition through Kreation Music Rights
SM Entertainment is strategically enhancing its position within the music publishing sector by engaging global talent via its subsidiary, Kreation Music Rights (KMR). As of the end of January, KMR has successfully signed agreements with 86 creators in just five months, as reported by SM Entertainment.
Highlighting Key Collaborations
Significant among these collaborations are contributions from Dsign Music, a Norwegian songwriting and production powerhouse. They are known for chart-topping Kpop tracks like Girls’ Generation’s “Genie” (2009), NCT Dream’s “ISTJ” (2023), and Taemin from SHINee’s “Want” (2019). Additionally, the Sweden-based songwriter duo Sunshine, responsible for hits like Red Velvet’s “Psycho” (2019) and aespa’s “Spicy” (2023), are part of KMR’s impressive roster.
These talents are affiliated with KMR’s European branch, established in Stockholm, Sweden, in December last year, aiming to scout European talent.
Expanding Across Continents
Plans are underway for KMR to extend its reach to the United States by setting up a corporate entity and forming alliances with local companies to draw North American creators, according to SM Entertainment. The ambition is to position KMR as Asia’s premier music publishing company within the next five years.
Fostering Domestic Talent
KMR is equally focused on nurturing local talent. It hosts three production teams—Smash Hit, Monotree, and The Hub—as distinct business units within the company.
Monotree boasts 603 songs registered with the Korea Music Copyright Association. Meanwhile, its Chief Producer, Hwang Hyun, has credits on tracks like IVE’s “Kitsch” (2023) and Seventeen’s “I Wish” (2020).
The Hub features an international team of young producers and songwriters. Consequently, it is led by Chief Producer Yoo Byung-hyun, who is noted for his work on NMIXX’s “Soñar(Breaker)” and “Break The Wall.”
Smash Hit comprises 22 Korean songwriters under the leadership of Chief Producer Kangta, a member of the legendary boy band H.O.T.
A Comprehensive Strategy for Growth
“Our primary objective this year is to onboard top-tier songwriters from Korea, Europe, and the United States. The company plans to leverage KMR’s robust production capabilities to venture into artist management, supporting the realization of SM 3.0’s ‘multi-label’ strategy.”
