Songwriters of IU Songs Speak Up Against Plagiarism Scandal

Following the previous plagiarism scandal and police reports, songwriters of IU songs Good Day, The Red Shoes, and BBIBBI songs finally made official statements.

On May 11, songwriters Lee Jong Hoon and Lee Min Soo, who worked behind IU songs Good Day, The Red Shoes, and BBIBBI, updated the public on the plagiarism scandal and accusations against the Kpop diva.

Official Statements from Kpop Songwriters Lee Min Soo & Lee Jong Hoon

Firstly, songwriter Lee Min Soo who composed The Red Shoes and Good Day, once again clarified that she did not refer to anyone’s work while working on the two IU songs. Previously, she had addressed the issue in 2013 and refused to comment further. However, the recent plagiarism scandal against IU made her clarify the issue once more.

“I denied the plagiarism issue against The Red Shoes via a press release in 2013 when the song came out. And I refrained from further commenting because I believed it would be pointless.

But because of the unreasonable accusation against the artist recently, I decided to state this message carefully.

I did not reference or have anyone’s songs in mind when working on Good Day and The Red Shoes.

As the songwriter of these songs, I truly hope this issue does not break anyone’s heart, especially IU’s and those who love her.”

At the same time, Lee Jong Hoon, who wrote BBIBBI, also addressed IU plagiarism issue in an Instagram post.

“I did not plagiarize any work while working on BBIBBI.

After listening to the songs that claimed similarities in YouTube videos, I confirmed multiple differences between the songs.

Aside from the genre characteristics of hiphop/r&b, there have been many differences and individuality in the songs’ aspects, including their chord progressions, song structures, instrument arrangements, and more.

If you need my further explanation in the future, I will explain fully. I will gladly correct this condemnation and misunderstanding without going through the legal process.”

The TRUE Motive Behind Plagiarism Scandal Against Kpop Diva IU

Along with the clarification, songwriter Lee Jong Hoon revealed the true motive behind the plagiarism scandal against Kpop singer IU.

According to the songwriter, plagiarism is the domain of the composer, not the artist. Therefore, any issue and plagiarism accusation should be directed against the songwriter. That is why Lee Jong Hoon felt sorry that the accuser ridiculously picked the wrong target for their accusation.

Lee Jong Hoon further stated that third-party plagiarism reports have no legal effects. Such reports can only be eligible coming from the victim, those who actually own the allegedly-plagiarized songs. Therefore, the songwriter believed that the plagiarism scandal against Kpop diva IU was only aimed at tarnishing her reputation.

“I cannot help but feel sorry you chose the wrong target for the accusation.

Copyright issues are the composer’s domain, not the singers. So even if you want to make a complaint, you should have made it against me, the composer.

Also, plagiarism falls under ‘chingojae’ category. It means that the officials can only persecute the crime based on a complaint from the victim.

So, third-party complaints and accusations have no legal effects.

It is clear that the accuser does not intend to create legal consequences. They just made these reports to damage the artist.”

Merely Ridiculous Accusation from Uneducated Accusers

Furthermore, a music communicator further testified regarding the true motive behind the plagiarism scandal against 6 songs of Kpop diva IU.

JTBC reported testimony on May 11 from music communicator Gachi Kpop who previously raised plagiarism suspicions against Yoo Hee Yeol. According to the testimony, the accusers had forcibly cut down overlapping melodies as if they were looking for the same picture.

That is why, according to the music communicator, nobody paid attention to the reports. Why? Because they simply came from uneducated people who had no understanding of music.

“They are just people who don’t know music. That’s why their reports have not gained any public support even after a year.

Using references does not mean plagiarism. Plagiarism issue is valid when a person uses these references in almost identical ways to the original work. That’s how it becomes an issue.

Having similar rhymes and chords is still considered acceptable.”

Music Communicator Gachi.

The communicator further pointed out that nobody should have taken the reports seriously. He believed that it was only a ridiculous unworthy happening because the accuser’s only aim was to shift all the responsibility to IU, not the composer/songwriter.

Repeated Plagiarism Scandal Against Kpop Diva IU and Her Songs – Your Thoughts?

So, what do you think about this new enlightenment on the plagiarism scandal against Kpop diva IU and her songs? It is truly appalling that some accusers were willing to go to such a length only to repeat ridiculous accusations based on unreliable and uneducated sources. What is the reason?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. In the meantime, let’s listen to IU’s performance during her latest concert. And stay with Kpoppost Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Telegram channel for more Korean entertainment updates.

I pity the accuser. He/she was probably too idle amd created such a mess to keep him/herself occupied.
