Korean Netflix Movies and Series in 2023

In 2022, the Korean Netflix series, Squid Game, recorded the highest number of viewers and became the first non-English drama to win six Emmy Awards. Other series released in 2022 are also popular, such as All Of Us Are Dead, Narco Saints, Model Family, and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.

But now, it’s time for more exciting Korean Netflix movies and series in 2023!

1. Jung_E

Release date: January 20
Cast: Kang Soo-youn, Kim Hyun-joo, Ryu Kyung-soo
Genre: Sci-Fi Movies, Action & Adventure, Dramas
Runtime: 98 minutes

Director of Hellbound, Yeon Sang-ho, returns with a sci-fi film. Jung_E sets in the 22nd century on a desolated Earth where humans can no longer live due to climate change. Amid the chaos, a civil war breaks out within the man-made shelter.

To end the war, researchers at the AI lab try to make a cloning of the brain of a heroic soldier. Seo Hyun(Kang Soo Yeon), the team leader of the laboratory, and Sang Hun (Ryoo Kyung Soo), the laboratory director, are responsible for the experiment.

Meanwhile,Jung_E (Kim Hyun Joo), the elite leader of the allied forces, becomes the subject of a brain cloning experiment and the potential key to winning the war.

A little important note, Jung_E is the last acting performance by actress Kang Soo Yeon who passed away on May 7, 2022, due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

2. Believer 2

Cast: Cho Jin Woong, Cha Seung Won, Han Hyo Joo, Oh Seung Hoon, Kim Dong Young, Lee Joo Young
Genre: Action, Thriller, Crime, Drama

Believer was very popular as soon as its release in 2018. And now the sequel of this movie will come out as one of the must-watch Korean Netflix movies and series in 2023.

The sequel follows Won Ho (Cho Jin Woong), a detective who looks for missing person Rak (Oh Seung Hoon) and chases after the boss of a drug ring, Mr. Lee.

3. The Match

Cast: Lee Byung-hun, Yoo Ah-in, Moon Jung-hee, Kim Kang-hoon, Ko Chang-seok
Genre: Drama, sport

The director of Narco Saints, Yoon Jong Bin, participated in the scriptwriting of The Match. Lee Byung-hun and Yoo Ah-in team up as two legendary players in the Korean Go (baduk) world, Cho Hun Hyun and Lee Chang Ho.

4. Mask Girl

Cast: Go Hyun-jung, Nana, Ahn Jae-hong, Yeom Hye-ran, Choi Daniel
Genre: Thriller, Comedy, Drama

One of the most exciting Korean Netflix series in 2023 is Mask Girl, which follows Kim Mo-mi (Go Hyun-jung), an ordinary office woman with a severe sense of inferiority in appearance. During nights, she performs live for an online show with a mask covering her face.

When a co-worker, Joo Oh Nam (Ahn Jae-hong), starts to have feelings for Kim Mo-mi, her already complicated life takes a dark turn.

To be noted, Mask Girl is for a more adult audience as it contains violence and profanity. The series is adapted from a webtoon series with the same name, written by Maemi and illustrated by Hee Se.

5. Murder DIEary

Another Naver webtoon-based series coming out as Korean Netflix series in 2023 is Murder DIEary. It depicts the activities of an ordinary college student, Lee Tang (Choi Woo-shik), who accidentally kills a man at a convenience store. Lee Tang suffers from guilt and fear of murder while the detective is chasing him.

However, later he learns that the person he accidentally killed was a serial killer. Slowly, Lee Tang realizes he has a supernatural ability to recognize ‘bad seeds’ in people.

6. Black Knight

Based on a Naver webtoon of the same name, Black Knight is undoubtedly one of the must-watch Korean Netflix series in 2023.

Set in 2071, the world suffers from severe air pollution, and humans can’t live without a respirator. As a result, people rarely leave their homes and rely heavily on parcel delivery for their daily needs. Delivery drivers, known as knights, ensure to deliver the packages and protect them from thieves.

The legendary knight 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) meets Sa Wol, a refugee who dreams of becoming a knight. Long story short, Sa Wol’s life is saved by Seol A (Esom), an officer in the Defense Intelligence Command, and Knight 5-8 helps him to become a knight.

7. Arthdal Chronicles 2

Cast: Lee Joon-gi, Shin Se-kyung, Jang Dong-gun, Kim Ok-bin
Genre: Historical, Romance, Fantasy, Political

Despite the cast change, Arthdal Chronicles 2 is one of the most-awaited Korean Netflix movies and series in 2023. After successfully suppressing the massive rebellion of the tribes slaughtered by Ta Gon and the Agos finally achieving the reunification of 30 clans under the leadership of Eun Seom in season 1, the story becomes more exciting in season 2.

The story in season 2 sets eight years after Ta Gon has become king. Ta Gon’s Kingdom of Arthdal and Eun Seom’s Ago Union are set to face an inevitable great war.

8. Gyeongseong Creature

The star-studded Korean Netflix series in 2023 that will make you renew your subscription is Gyeongseong Creature. The writer of Dr. Romantic, Kang Eun-kyung, wrote the script and the director of Stove League, Jung Dong-yoon, took charge of directing.

The story follows Gyeongseong’s greatest asset man, Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon), who thinks his life is much more important than the injustice in this world. However, one day he encounters a woman who will transform his life.
