Korean Remake Movie “The Ax” by Park Chan Wook

Following the casting news in early April, with top Korean stars Lee Byung Hun and Son Ye Jin set to star, director Park Chan Wook’s new project “The Ax” will begin production in August.

The upcoming Korean film “The Ax” (literal title) is based on the novel of the same name by Donald E. Westlake. The novel was first made into a film in 2005 by a French-Greek director, Costa-Gavras, under the title “Le couperet” (“The Axe”).

Initially, director Park wanted to make it a Hollywood adaptation in 2017, but unfortunately, the project was canceled. However, he was still determined to make a Korean version.

Speaking at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival, Park revealed his passion for the project and called it a “lifelong project.” Moreover, he conveyed, “I want to make it one day and have it as one of my masterpiece works.”

Storyline

“The Ax” depicts the journey of a middle-class man who develops an intense commitment to his employer. This leads him to fall into madness after he loses his job. Struggling to find new opportunities, he takes various actions to eliminate potential competitors.

Korean Remake Movie “The Ax” Cast Lineup

Two famous South Korean actors Lee Byung Hun and Son Ye Jin have been chosen to star in this dark comedy film.

Actor Lee Byung Hyun and director Park Chan Wook previously worked together on the Korean movie “Joint Security Area” in 2000. The upcoming project will be their first reunion following the film.

This upcoming new movie will be actress Son Ye Jin’s grand comeback after she welcomed her first child with actor Hyun Bin in November 2022. The project will also be the first collaboration between Son Ye Jin and director Park Chan Wook.

Stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime, let’s watch “Le couperet” by Costa-Gavras below.
