On June 2020, ARMYs were worried that BTS Jin is leaving BTS due to military service. Kim Seok Jin, the oldest member of the South Korean septet, was born on December 4, 1992 and will turn 28 this year. It means that he is supposed to start military service before the end of next year. However, Big Hit Entertainment reveals that it is possible that BTS Jin military enlistment could be postponed until the end of 2021.
Military Enlistment Exemption
Under the current law, every healthy and eligible South Korean man at the age of 18-28 must enlist and undergo compulsory military service. The military duty will take 18 to 22 months to guard against North Korea. Nevertheless, there are exceptions to postpone military service.
Initiated in 1973, the law provides alternative service or exempt from military service for South Korean citizens who have won awards in state-recognized domestic and international competitions. Like, classical musicians and athletes.
Unfortunately, the law does not apply to South Korean pop artists, including BTS. It raises criticism from people who support BTS military service exemption.
Further, another exemption to postpone military service is valid for master’s degree students who have not finished their studies. The law allows them to delay the compulsory military service until they turn 29.
New legislation Military Enlistment
Since there are critics due to the current law of military enlistment, a new bill has been proposed in South Korea. The new law proposed to add entertainers who have made “great contributions” to popular culture into the list that could postpone their conscripted until they are 30.
